Cheap ID verification in the UK

What cheap ID verification in the UK should cost for an event, what a low price leaves out, and how Protect Events prices passport and licence checks.

Updated 7 October 2026

Cheap ID verification in the UK is easy to advertise and awkward to buy. An event does not need a call-centre KYC product. It needs a check a guest can finish when they sign up or buy the ticket, at a price that still makes sense for a small night.

Protect Events publishes the starting prices. The trial is 25 checks with no card, enough to give the system a try. Starter is £9 a month for small events: 500 checks, under 2 pence each. Growth is £29 a month for events that scale: 2,500 checks, about 1 pence each. A larger one-off event is quoted on the volume you expect, from about 1 pence a check.

What the price is actually buying

A pre-arrival check has to do a few unglamorous things well.

  • Capture a face, with the guest following prompts, so you are looking at the person who will attend.
  • Photograph a passport or driving licence. Licences include the back.
  • Photograph the guest holding that document.
  • Read the date of birth and compare it with the minimum age for that session.
  • Decline expired documents.
  • Hold back documents that look edited, or look like a photo of a screen, for the review pipeline you manage.

That is the product. It reads the document in the camera. It does not call the passport office or DVLA, and it does not need a chip reader. If a supplier’s “cheap” tier drops the face match or the held-document photo, you are paying less because the record is thinner.

Where teams quietly overspend

Hardware is the usual leak. Scanners, spares, and training cost more than the monthly software on a small-event plan, and they still leave the check until people are already there. Doing it at signup moves the fiddly part to the guest, on the phone they already have. Your team looks at a result, and manages the review pipeline when something looks wrong. The platform is that pipeline, and it can send the result to your own system with an API-based check.

A fair way to compare quotes

Ask four questions before you call a price cheap.

  1. What is included in one check: face, document, held-document photo, age, expiry?
  2. What happens to the images, and when are they deleted? Protect Events deletes ID images after 30 days, unless the check is still in your review pipeline.
  3. Where does the processing run? These checks run in London.
  4. Can the guest flow carry your event name, or will every customer see a generic KYC brand on your signup?

Which plan matches the event

The trial is enough to give the system a try. Starter fits small events. Growth fits events that scale, at 2,500 checks. A single large date can sit above either month. That is why event volume sits beside the published plans on the pricing page. Tell us the expected checks. The per-check idea stays the same. The invoice matches the event.

If you are still choosing the model, the companion piece is ID verification as a service.

Questions operators ask

How much does ID verification cost in the UK?

The trial is enough to give the system a try: 25 checks and no card. Starter is £9 a month for small events, 500 checks, under 2p each. Growth is £29 a month for events that scale, 2,500 checks, about 1p each.

Is a cheaper check a weaker check?

A useful cheap check still captures a live face, reads a passport or driving licence, and compares the date of birth with the age you set. A price that skips the face, or keeps images with no deletion date, is cheap for a reason.

Do we need to buy scanners?

No. Guests use the phone they already have, when they sign up or buy a ticket. There is no flatbed and no dedicated ID scanner.
